Senior Fitness Zone

In rapidly aging Europe, in thirty years from now 40% of the population will be 65+. One of the most common causes of hospitalization among people in this age group are falls, which as we age are more and more often associated with fracture risk. By creating outdoor gyms for seniors we want to primarily prevent falls, leading to fractures.

How to encourage seniors to exercise?

 1. Install low intensity training equipment.
  • Static bikes, elliptical machines, and body flexors.

Sport equipment for balance and flexibility practice improve body equilibrium, strengthen muscles, extend the range of motion and improve dexterity after just three months of regular training.

2. Incorporate fun into the workout.
  • Choose modern appliances in beautiful colors and interesting forms.
Gymnastics equipment should resemble toys, not torture devices. If  people using them will have fun, they won’t  feel like they're working hard and might be more eager to continue practice.

3. Place clear instructions.
  • Use large font and add illustrations.
First contact with exercise machines can be intimidating, especially if we lack expertise. All machines should have information plaques, with easy explanation, and user manual. Only motivation should be required to start the first training.

4. Help to overcome shame.
  • Leagibly mark, that the equipment is designed for senior citizens.
The biggest obstacle keeping people from the decision to begin exercising is often fear of being ridicule and worrying about what will others say. Indications, showing that the equipment is designed for seniors might convince them to take the first step.

5. Create space for collective activity.
  • Place Senior Fitness zone near the children's playground.
Fun is a great link between adults and children in their lives. If the grandparents take care after their grandchildren when the parents are at work, senior gym devices nearby the children's playground will provide a place for common activity.

6. Let them initiate social contacts.
  • Be sure to include devices for pairs and group excersises.
Open gyms are gathering places, that can prevent feelings of isolation and loneliness among seniors. Especially training equipment designed for pairs (face to face with the partner) and group exercises create more opportunities to establish local connections.

7. Remember about places to rest.
  • Set a bench in a quiet location.
Take into account different needs of seniors. No one is always full of energy and willing to exercise. The bench in a quiet place where one can peacefully read a book is as important as any other attraction.
